I have been a long standing AT&T DSL subscriber in Texas. When my seemingly ancient 2Wire Homeportal 1000 finally gave way after ~7 years of use (aka, died), I called AT&T and assumed they would send a replacement DSL modem post haste. Au contraire. Said I was on my own, and was frankly pretty shocked as I am a big AT&T customer. I use an Apple Airport Extreme wireless network (5 wireless distribution nodes) and did not want/need to purchase the latest 2Wire WIFI device at over 0, but I also wanted more than one ethernet port on the device. BTW – I ran the HomePortal in Bridge Mode.

The D-Link DSL-2540B fit the bill but I was hesitant as I needed to configure the ne modem in Bridge or Bridging mode as I use PPPoE to connect to the net from my Airport Extreme base station. I found the following config info on the net (see below) while researching various solutions, and when my DSL-2540B today, I was up and running within 10 minutes.

Performance and connectivity have been great.

AT&T Bridge Mode Settings

Connect your computer directly to the D-Link. Use a cable, as Wi-Fi masochism is beyond the scope of this document. Browse to http://192.168.1.1/ in the browser of your choice. If your system has assigned itself a 169.mumble address, you will first need to manually assign your computer an IP address like 192.168.1.5, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and a default gateway of 192.168.1.1 to do so.
You should be challenged for a username and password to proceed. By default these are both set to “admin” and you really ought to change this at some point.

First of all auto-connect does not work for Verizon but manual configuration will work, the settings below is for verizon. I have verizon dsl with dhcp, no pppoe or pppoa, which means i get a dynamic ip address from verizon. I had to disconnect my old modem overnight so the IP address would be release from my old modem, and then plug in my new dlink modem and go into the dlink browser and create new wan setting and enter

VPI=0, VCI=35,MAC encapsulation,Routing=LLC/SNAP Bridging,Obtain IP Address Automatically,Connection type=MER,Service name=mer_0_35(default),Servicd category=UBR(UBR without PCR),Service state=enabled, nat enabled,Firewall=enabled,IGMP Multicast enabled,wan service enabled, Quality of service=disabled, user/password=admin/admin to start.

Update: After a 6 months to a year with all the manual configs I had set, it constantly stopped connecting to the internet after a few hours. It might have something to do with Verizon’s end not being compatible, I dunno. Sometimes it worked and then it stops working after few hours, it became a major headache that I had went back to my westell. Verizon only support their own routers and Dlink’s tech support are not network admins who know the configurations to connect your router to your isp so they’re useless. For verizon dsl people, I would stick with westell or go get FIOS like i did.

i wouldn’t waste your money on this book. The only way i can describe it is useless. Unless you plan on starting a donald trump sized electrical business with 500 employees. This book is all about running a huge business and has about one reference to the electrical field in it. Anyone starting an electrical contracting business isn’t gonna start anywhere within the scope of this book.

I had a 7.1 channel Home Theater Receiver (HTR), but I got rid of it in favor of this stereo receiver. For me, the HTR was excessively complicated with too many menus to work through just to play music from my collection of LP’s, cassette’s, or CD’s. The Teac AG-790A is simple to use for playing music. This receiver can control four speakers. The description of this product does not mention that if you want to control two sets of speakers (4 in total), they should be identical. There is no way to adjust for differences between two sets of speakers with different sound qualities or power ratings. TEAC’s manual makes the same recommendation for identical speakers if you are going to use four speakers. The controls are very easy to use, although as one reviewer mentioned, I too would have preferred more dials instead of buttons. I know, “old school”. Still, the buttons are very easy to use. I have a phonograph, cassette recorder/player, and CD recorder/player all attached to this receiver with a couple of Bose speakers. The radio tuner is great too. The sound of music this receiver produces is fabulous. However, for those times when I want to emphasize the bass sounds, I might add a powered sub-woofer as my “second set of speakers”. There are bass and treble controls on this receiver, which work great. I am really talking about the sound quality of my speakers and not the receiver. I am talking about really pumping up the bass beyond what my speakers can provide. A sub-woofer with its own internal power system connected as the second set of speakers will allow me to adjust for the differences between the different speakers independent of this receiver. With the bass, treble adjustments available on this receiver, there really is no need for a powered sub-woofer, unless you are a bass freak as I am sometimes. That is just a personal choice. This receiver provides a lot of adjustment with its bass, treble and loudness controls. The bottom line is I highly recommend this receiver for music lovers.

First my qualifications: I am older, with a large collection of vintage vinyl, and a love of on-air classical music. My stereo system uses two Acoustic Research AR-2Ax speakers. I am not a modern audiophile.

That said, I am completely satisfied with the Teac AG-790A receiver. I required phono inputs, and this relatively inexpensive receiver has those and they work. I also listen to a local classical music FM station (Santa Barbara still does have one) and this unit has endeared itself to me by the way it locks to that signal. I have also used its video input to play the sound from a six hour VHS tape of swing band music.

In short, it has done everything I wanted. If your needs are similar to mine, you’ll not go wrong with this unit.

The TEAC AG-790A could use some improvements, even considering its budget price. I have several complaints. From the moment I turn on the unit, there is an ever present background hiss coming through the speakers. It is especially noticeable during quiet passages in music, or when listening at low volume levels. The tuner sensitivity is very weak; only the strongest local stations come in good. One thing I find extremely annoying on this model is that some of the settings will always return to their default settings, no matter where you put them. For instance, when you select FM mono, it will return to stereo as soon as you change stations. Another is the tuning mode; when you select “manual tuning mode,” it will keep returning to “preset tuning mode!” Speaking of presets, there are no numeric buttons for direct preset access on the unit or the remote, so you have to scroll through them all to get to your station. The volume control is another major issue. It tends to “jump around” if you are trying to make fine adjustments to the volume. It, like most models today, has the type where digital numbers appear on the display when you turn it. I will have it set to 10 and want to go up just one or two; as soon as I grab the knob, it “jumps” down to 8 first. I even had it jump to max volume while listening with headphones. I almost threw my headphones across the room! I prefer the older style volume control where you had a pointer on the knob with a numeric scale around it. Oh, and while we’re on the subject of knobs, here’s a neat trick: make the bass/treble/balance control buttons round so that in your frontal product photos they will look like conventional knobs even though they are actually buttons! To adjust the bass/treb/balance, you must press the button then turn the volume knob to make the adjustments. I hate this! I like to just grab a single knob and tweak my settings, not go through a two step process every time I want to make an adjustment. Another peculiarity is the sleep timer setup. The scale counts down instead of up. In other words, if you want to set it for 20 minutes, you have to press the button to go from 90, 80, 70…all the way down to 20. If the timer has counted down to 10 minutes and you want to add another 10, you must count down to 0 first and start over at 90 and count down until you get to 20 again! I have never seen a sleep timer on any other device that works in reverse like this one. They usually count up, so if you want to add time you just press once or twice. The functionality of the sleep timer is not usually a major consideration when I shop for gear, but it just seems a little strange that they would design it that way. Another thing that is worth mentioning is that the phono input sensitivity seems a bit low; I have to turn the volume control up to a fairly high level before getting a decent sound level when using my turntable, and I have a phono cartridge with a high output level. I originally purchased the Sherwood RX-4105, but I returned it because it did not have phono input or tape “monitoring.”(see my review of the RX-4105) As far as sound quality goes, I think the Sherwood was a little better, due to the hiss I mentioned on the TEAC. However, the tuner was just as weak on the Sherwood. I went with these models because my old receiver gave out and I was looking for an inexpensive model to tide me over until I could save some money for a more expensive model. The TEAC fills the bill to some degree, but I wish I had spent a little bit more and got one of the Onkyo models. At least they have numeric preset buttons, and conventional bass/treb/balance knobs. This review may be too much useless information for some people, but I know the product specs and features list doesn’t always tell the whole story.

I purchased a SanDisk 32 GB microSDHC Flash Memory Card SDSDQM-032G nearly two months ago, for use in my VIZIO 8-Inch Tablet VTAB1008. At the same time, I also purchased a higher-priced PNY 32 GB microSDHC Card (P-SDU32G10-EFS2) which is supposed to be a ‘class-10′. My benchmark results, however, show that the Sandisk class-4 card is actually faster – most of the time.

I used two sets of benchmark programs. One is called ‘Flash Memory Toolkit v2.0′, which measures the random read/write speed of files between 1MB and 15MB. The other one is called ‘H2testw v1.4′, which measures the sequential read/write speed using 1GB files. Here are my results: (see my uploaded charts in ‘Customer Images’ section for details)

- For smaller files (1-5MB), the Sandisk class-4 card gives an amazing write speed of 15-17MB/s, while the PNY ‘class-10′ card can only get 1-6MB/s

- For larger files (10-15MB), the Sandisk and PNY cards are about equal at around 8MB/s for write

- For huge files (1GB), the PNY did better at 9.5MB/S, while the Sandisk dropped to 5.5MB/s

- The read speeds of both cards are equally high at around 18MB/S (this number may be limited by the maximum speed of my card reader used)

What the above shows is that: When used in a typical digital camera (with file size 3-5MB), this Sandisk ‘class-4′ card is at least twice as fast as the PNY so-called ‘class-10′ card. But when used in a HD video camera (sequential writing of huge file), then the PNY card should perform better.

For a card to be marketed as a ‘class-10′, it must maintain a MINIMUM write speed of 10MB/s. So by this definition, the PNY card does not qualify since it cannot even achieve a MAXIMUM write speed of 10MB/s. This Sandisk card, on the other hand, exceeds the requirement of ‘class-4′ by a huge margin.

Sandisk seems to be the only flash memeory manufacturer that still gives honest, conservative speed class ratings. Any other manufacturers would have labeled this card a ‘class-6′ or even higher. As a matter of principle, I rather give my money to a company that promises less but delivers more, instead of to others that do the opposite. At the present cost of about 1 buck per GB, this is an unbeatable deal!

[Aside]
The capacity of this card, as reported by my computer, is only 29.7GB. Note that this is actually normal, because compter people define one ‘Giga’ as ’2 to the power 30′, which is 7.4% greater than 1 billion. So 29.7GB comes to just about 32 billion bytes, which is ’32GB’ according to marketing people.

I re-tested the two cards above, using the CrystalDiskMark v3.01. The results are consistent with my previous finding. See my newly uploaded charts in ‘Customer Images’ for details.

No Problems, Works as Advertised, and Came With a MicroSD Card Adapter!, March 8, 2012

So I read some of the reviews about this microSD card and I wanted to chip in my experiences.

I purchased mine from Amazon.com via the vendor “MemoryMogul.” It arrived at my porch in a small envelope package and did not have any of the bulk packaging that one would find from a retail store. Inside this envelope was just a small plastic case holding the microSDHC card as well as a SanDisk microSD card adapter. This was surprising to me since it wasn’t advertised that this microSD card would come with an adapter. I guess that’s good in my case since I was going to purchase a separate adapter. The package did not come with an instruction manual, or any SanDisk packaging for that matter. [Please see the customer image I uploaded]

Apart from the unexpected package and its contents, everything about the microSD card works as advertised:
1. My Macbook and Dell laptops both recognized that 31.90 GB of space are available to use in my card. Some people have reported that they received cards with less available space.
2. Also relating to people’s complaints, some have said that they cannot write more than 10 GB of data onto their cards. I am happy to report that I can in fact write more than 10 GB of data to my card (right now I have about 17 GB of music and JPEG files loaded onto my card).
3. Still relating to peoples’ reported issues, my card has a read/write speed of 4.0 MB/s or higher, as it should since it’s a class 4 microSD card. Some have reported that the read/write speed is less than that. To put it to the test, I did many benchmark tests and compared it to other SD cards I have. If you are interested, I included them at the bottom of this review.

All in all, I am satisfied with my purchase. For USD, this 32 GB class 4 microSDHC card is worth every penny. I will be using this product with my SanDisk SDMX22-004G-A57P Sansa Clip Zip 4 GB, Purple portable media player as an expandable memory option. Everything about the microSDHC card itself works as advertised according to the benchmark tests as well as practical file transfers. The included microSD card adapter was also a nice surprise to me and I no longer need to purchase a separate adapter.

To be honest, I don’t completely understand the results of the software benchmark tests, so if you can interpret them, more power to you. Because of this, I decided to do a bunch of real-world file transfers (copying) to test the write speeds of the [micro]SD cards. I chose various batch sizes for my tests to see if the size affected the cards’ write speeds.

That being said, all tests were done using the same SD card reader, microSD card adapter, music files, source for files, and up-to-date software:
Targus USB 2.0 SD card reader
SanDisk MicroSD card adapter
Macbook 5.1 running Mac OS X 10.6.8 (for file copy, AJA, and Xbench tests)
Files were copied/transferred from an Other World Computing On-The-Go Pro portable external hard drive via USB 2.0 (500 GB Seagate 7200.4 RPM Momentus hard drive)
Dell Vostro 1400 running Windows XP Home Edition SP3 with the latest updates installed (for ATTO, CrystalDiskMark, and Flash Memory Toolkit [free] tests)

I’m not sure if it matters or not, but while doing these tests, I left the computer alone so that no other computer processes would interrupt the tests.

My wife and I were in need of an air bed. I had surgery on my leg this week, and it was decided that I’d have our regular bed to myself for a few weeks. So we needed a place for my wife to sleep, as several weeks on the sofa isn’t a great idea. So I set out looking for an air bed. We didn’t know one brand from another, so it came down to reviews and price.

There seemed to be two sticking points with people. First, did the thing come with a pump, and how did it feel? Price too to a lesser extent. I did notice that some beds do not come with a pump, and you’re looking at an additional on average for a decent sized pump. We were looking for something decent, I didn’t want the cheapest one imaginable, but I wasn’t looking to break the bank either.

So I happened upon this one. After reading the reviews, I decided to take the plunge. My wife has slept on it for a couple of nights, and has said it is OK. I think that’s what most people here who are ragging on it aren’t taking into account. THIS IS AN AIR BED. If you buy this (or any other one) expecting it to feel the same as your regular box spring and mattress, then you’re missing the point. Air beds aren’t meant to be the same. My wife says it’s comfortable enough, but she wouldn’t want to sleep on it long term. Which is the point of these. Short term bed. It feels great. It has kind of a water bed feel to it (especially if you don’t fill it to max capacity).

The air pump is built into the unit, you basically open a hatch, take out the plug, put it in the wall, and go. You run the pump by deciding whether or not you are going to inflate or deflate it (it sucks air out too). It filled the whole thing in about 2-3 minutes. It’s somewhat loud, but not excessively loud, so if you’re in a place where quiet is an issue, this might be a concern, but I imagine any pump would be that way.

Some reviews talk about leakage or punctures. Sure, it’s got the potential for punctures, but what air bed does not? The package comes with a puncture repair for a few minor leaks, but we have had it inflated for a week now, and have not yet had to refill it.

It’s good quality, it’s cheap, and has a pump. We give it five stars, as my wife can sleep on it, and it does the job. Recommended!

I live in a smallish one bedroom apartment and have frequent visits from out-of-town friends and relatives, so I have a pretty significant need for temporary beds. When set up, the temp bed is right in the middle of the living room, so I need to deflate and store a temporary air bed on a daily basis when guests visit. Unfortunately this is a nightmare endurance test for air beds as the frequent compression and folding of the unit for storage along with the periodic inflation and deflation is a formula for a shortened air bed lifespan.

There are two significant names in makers of at-home air beds: Aerobed and Intex. (Coleman seems to be targeted more for camping use and their beds by most accounts seem to be cheaper and less comfortable than these other two more residential brands.) Aerobed costs three to four times more than comparable Intex products, and it may not surprise you to hear that the Intex also offers significantly lower quality along with the lower cost.

This model, the Intex high-rise twin size (18″ high) appeared decent at first inspection. Unlike Aerobed, which insists that every sleeper must fit comfortably on a 74″ long mattress, the Intex is 80″ so taller sleepers or those who like their pillow under the top of their heads rather than under their necks will be more comfy.

Unfortunately this is the only advantage Intex has over Aerobed. The Intex feels mushier even at maximum inflation, so the “adjustable firmness” feature on the Inex is wasted unless you like sleeping in jello, as even maximum pressure inflation will be as soft as most users want.

The main problem with the Intex is that the motor to inflate it is inside the bed. Aerobed uses a detachable inflating motor. The problem with the Intex design is that the internal motor creates a hard inflexible lump in the interior of the bed, along with a sharpish rigid exterior plastic panel with the inflation control and electrical cord storage. As might be predicted, the Intex is almost impossible to fold into a compact bundle, and you will soon give up on attempting to stuff the folded bed back into its storage bag. At best you will end up with an untidy big lump, like a half full garbage bag, that needs to be stowed away in a corner or closet. Even worse, as you compress and fold the bed up, you are stretching, bruising, and maybe even tearing the internal and external lining of the mattress around the motor and the external control panel.

In my case, this contusing and abrasion of the mattress for storage resulted in a major air leak occurring after only maybe a dozen uses. Fortunately, this happened in the first three weeks of ownership, so I could easily get a refund as I bought the unit from Amazon. Intex itself has only a 90 day warranty on its products versus a 1 year warranty for Aerobed products.

The air leak in the Intex basically makes it un-useable as it loses most of its air after only three hours. The sleeper wakes up sinking into a plastic mush, and although you can of course always add air in the middle of the night, this does not make for restful sleep, as at the air loss rate of the leak here you would have to add air twice during the night in order to get 8 hrs of rest on a reasonably firm and supportive sleeping surface.

Though this review seems to be an endorsement of Aerobed, my experience with that brand has also been mixed. My original Aerobed twin size low (6″ height) is still alive and kicking after 5 years of frequent use, but a later Aerobed deluxe full size high riser (24″ off the floor) lasted only 15 months of light use before developing a leak. Moral of the story from my experience: if you want a durable air bed, especially one that can stand being deflated and stored frequently, get a low rise Aerobed. The higher rise models seem to be more inclined to spring leaks.

The other lesson here is that Intex beds are pretty junky. Looking at the reviews of this model on Amazon, 8 out of 28 reviewers (including me) report air leaks on this model. That’s about a 30% lemon rate, so buyer beware. Spending more on an Aerobed gets you a better warranty and also better design and build quality.

Even so, unless you plan to keep your air bed permanently inflated and set up, I would suggest getting some other temporary guest bed solution. The 74 inch max length of the Aerobed models is an annoyance, and the long term durability of these inflatable designs is very questionable where the product will be deflated and compressed for storage on a regular basis. Maybe an old-fashioned folding cot would be a better low-tech solution for many consumers in need of a frequently deployed and frequently stored temporary bed for guests…

This is a nice little laminator, and I used it even more than expected. But during a momentary lapse of reason, I try to use a partial rings – one that was not sealed at the bottom. They tell you To do so, but still. disappeared all machines, and not back out. It does not look like I can open it without destroying it, so I called their 800 number. They are so good, and they sent me a mailing label to ship it back for free. They said that if they can fix it, they want to do it and send it again. If they do, they will send me a new one. All free of charge – which is fantastic because it was my own fault for doing what they are told not to do. I just got a new one in the mail. Only I paid for, yet replaced they do it for free when I messed it up. You just can not do any better than that!

I’m not a big fan of Dewalt, but even the worst companies do at least some things right. Dewalt did this one right.

It’s built well, works well, and it’s priced right. What more do you need?

Setting the depth is foolproof, and the depth stays consistent.

I use it more often for cement backerboard with durock screws than I do drywall. But for either job, I’m totally happy with its performance.

If you’re a homeowner/occassional user, the price puts this in the realm of serious consideration. If you’ve got three or four sheets of drywall to put up, you don’t need it.

If you think you’ll do more than one project in your lifetime though, spend the 90 bucks. It’s SO MUCH faster than the cordless drill approach. And you won’t over/under drive your screws (assuming you set the depth correctly to begin with, of course).

One word of warning to the casual user – Remember that this is a professional level tool. The instructions assume you’re a pro. You won’t just pick this thing up and start using it like a pro.

Expect to have to practice a little with it first, until you get the technique down. You typically run this thing all out at top speed without letting up on the trigger between screws. Most people have trouble until they figure that out.

It’s not a regular drill where you have to slowly bring the screw up to speed. With drywall guns, the bit doesn’t turn till you push the screw to the wall, when it catches it drives the screw at top speed, then stops turning once it hits the right depth. It all happens in the blink of an eye.

You can’t be overly careful with the thing, you have to put a screw on and jam it in with one quick decisive motion. Being timid with it only gets crooked screws driven half way.

I’d recommend using the shortest screws you can get by with until you get profficient with it.

So there’s a bit of an art to it (and this applies to all drywall guns, not just this one). But nothing you shouldn’t be able to pick up very quickly.

There are other good ones out there, but nothing I’d recommend over this one.

And if you’re thinking cordless – don’t do it. Cordless tools have their place, but this isn’t one of them. As mentioned above, you want to keep this thing pegged as you’re popping screws in. Having a power cord attached to you is a very small price to pay for never having to worry about a constantly diminishing battery charge.

(oh and only 4 stars because the instructions really are kind of useless, and I think they should include a case with some extra bits – they have to box the thing anyways, how much more would a blow molded case cost them instead? 50 cents?… The tool itself gets 5 stars)

This screwgun is awesome. It is by far the most powerful and comfortable screwgun out there. I love the nosecone. It keeps the depth right and doesn’t fall off. Far superior than the Makita or the heavy and clunky Milwaukee screwguns.

I looked at several competitive products and chose this one. This is a very good tool. It is easy to handle as it is light, yet powerful, and the trigger is large. These features give you good control esp with larger screws. I have driven up to 3 inch screws with ease. The nosecone takes some practice to adjust, but once you figure it out, it performs very nicely. My only complaint is that the instructions provided are kind of sparse and you end up figuring out how to use the tool by yourself. Not a big issue, however, as the tool is very simple.

Overall, very satisfied!!
